Set in 1928, this comic novel follows the adventures of Mattie Simpkin, a former suffragette adjusting to middle aged life after a very colourful past. Women aged 21 have finally been granted the vote which is a great victory for Mattie and her fellow radicals, however with pre-World War Two fascism on the rise this doesn’t signal the end of her campaigning, but rather the beginning of a new venture.
Previously seen in the novel Crooked Heart, author Lissa Evans has brought the character of Mattie to life once again. With a wealth of supporting characters, as well as Mattie’s observations about herself and the world, this love letter to Hampstead Heath will no doubt make you chuckle.
Old Baggage, though historical at its heart, commemorates anniversaries past while tackling issues that are still present today. Ultimately, this is a story about a courageous woman who will never give up the fight.
