This intense psychological thriller set in Tangier in the 1950s follows the story of two former college roommates, Alice and Lucy, who are unexpectedly reunited. With an unspeakable trauma in their past and Alice’s husband mysteriously disappearing upon her old roommate’s arrival, Alice begins to question their relationship, her life in Morocco and her own mental state.

This debut novel by Christine Mangan will delight fans of Patricia Highsmith and Daphne du Maurier, as her tension-building storytelling draws influences from both; and with the central protagonists being the unreliable narrators that they are, it makes everything about the narrative even harder to trust.

George Clooney’s production company has already got a Hollywood adaptation in the pipeline, slated to star Scarlett Johansson, which fans of Tangerine are already starting to anticipate.

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying by Marie Kondo

Marie Kondo’s first book about her Japanese tidying method will kick-start your spring cleaning, reinvigorating both your home and your mind. Her hugely popular KonMari Method, founded on the ‘once-cleaned, never-messy-again’ ethos, will inspire you to organise your home in the correct order to ensure a permanently clutter-free space.

Kondo’s method of organisation also possesses the ability to change your life. As you discard unwanted clothing, objects and paperwork, you pave the way for renewed confidence, success and drive to abandon any negativity that may be holding you back.

Her follow-up book Spark Joy is an illustrated step-by-step guide to rolling and folding away your clothing and accessories, only keeping things that ‘spark joy’, and is a great reading companion to The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying.

Spring by Ali Smith

Ali Smith’s Seasonal Quartet is a series of standalone novels representing each different seasons’ familiarity and renewal, whilst examining the passage of time. Her latest allegorical instalment focuses on new beginnings and explores this season being a connector of people and places, as well as to the past, present and future.

The Man Booker Prize-nominated Scottish author is no stranger to tackling ambitious themes, with her previous novels Hotel World, The Accidental and Girl Meets Boy exploring grief, familial relationships and even the reinterpretation of Ancient Greek myths.

Spring will be released on the 28th March 2019 and is currently available to pre-order.

Old Baggage by Lissa Evans

Set in 1928, this comic novel follows the adventures of Mattie Simpkin, a former suffragette adjusting to middle aged life after a very colourful past. Women aged 21 have finally been granted the vote which is a great victory for Mattie and her fellow radicals, however with pre-World War Two fascism on the rise this doesn’t signal the end of her campaigning, but rather the beginning of a new venture.

Previously seen in the novel Crooked Heart, author Lissa Evans has brought the character of Mattie to life once again. With a wealth of supporting characters, as well as Mattie’s observations about herself and the world, this love letter to Hampstead Heath will no doubt make you chuckle.

Old Baggage, though historical at its heart, commemorates anniversaries past while tackling issues that are still present today. Ultimately, this is a story about a courageous woman who will never give up the fight.
